This award-winning Orange Tree Theatre production is a sweeping, atmospheric drama with a cast of twenty, direct from Richmond's striking St. John the Divine church.
1170. A nation divided. Once the best of friends, King Henry II and his Archbishop, Thomas Becket, are now mortal enemies. Ignoring his allies’ fears, Becket, the ‘turbulent priest’, returns to Canterbury, tempting the monarch’s wrath. As the women of Canterbury seek shelter in the sacred space of the cathedral, four knights ride out on a deadly mission. The only question: who will blink first?
Sir David Suchet will play Thomas Becket, his first dramatic role for almost a decade. Besides his iconic role as Hercule Poirot, the Emmy Award-winning Suchet’s five-decade stage career includes Amadeus and All My Sons. Having performed many times on stage at the Theatre Royal, Sir David Suchet is set to make a welcome return to Bath having first appeared in Oleanna in 1993, with other appearances including Man and Boy in 2004, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, 2012, The Importance of Being Earnest in 2015 and the Olivier Award-nominated The Price in 2018. Bath audiences also enjoyed an exclusive look into his life with David Suchet: Poirot and More; A Retrospective, 2021.
