Hamish Young is both a practising artist and a highly experienced artist educator, bringing over twenty years of experience leading visual arts curriculum in Secondary schools. Currently Head of Art at Trinity Academy, Lockleaze, his leadership and practice are deeply informed by his lived experience as an adoptee, which drives his passionate focus on the power of art to transform lives and foster belonging.

The President and the Academician body form a critical part of the RWA’s collaborative leadership structure, working closely with the Board of Trustees (led by Chair George Ferguson) and the Executive Team (led by Director Ren Renwick) to drive the Academy forward.

Ren Renwick, Director of the RWA shared that “The RWA has thrived for nearly two centuries thanks to the dedication of the artists, supporters and leaders that make up its community. Hamish continues that legacy, and brings a commitment to ensuring the RWA is relevant and accessible to all. I know Hamish’s presidency will bring continuity, fresh energy and new opportunities as we shape the next chapter of the RWA's story, creating lifelong journeys with art for all communities”

Eiron Bailey, Headteacher at Trinity Academy shared that “We are absolutely delighted with Hamish’s appointment as President of Academicians. Hamish is a hugely dedicated, hardworking and talented Head of Department.  We know he will bring the same drive, thoughtfulness and creativity to the role. We feel very fortunate to have Hamish at Trinity and we are confident that the school and its students will benefit from Hamish’s role at the RWA.

Hamish Young shared that  “This is a tremendously exciting time to become President continuing to build our capital project that ensured our Grade II listed building remains one of the most beautiful buildings to see world-class art in the country.

I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with all the inspirational people who make the RWA the amazing place it is, including our Academicians, staff, volunteers, friends, trustees and patrons. I know that together we will ensure the RWA continues to be an ambitious and progressive place where people connect, learn and nurture their life-long journey with art. I really want the RWA to feel like a home for Art and Architecture, but most importantly a home for all of you.”

The Royal West of England Academicians body are a peer elected membership of up to 150 artist who are at the forefront of their career. Current Academicians include Alice Kettle, Valda Jackson, Sir Frank Bowling (hon) and Sir Richard Long (hon).
