Mendip Activity Centre, the flagship destination of Mendip Adventure, was delighted to welcome Tessa Munt, MP for Wells and Mendip Hills, on a recent visit to highlight the importance of outdoor education and the visitor economy.
Tessa was welcomed by Phil Turner, Head of Centre, who led her on a tour of the 250-acre site in the heart of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, showcasing places where young people's school trips and outdoor residentials come to life.
The purpose of the visit was to showcase Mendip’s unique role in supporting the local economy, while also demonstrating the transformative benefits of outdoor learning for young people.
The visit comes at a time when outdoor education is receiving growing national and government attention. The government is currently reviewing the role of outdoor learning within school curricula, recognising its value in improving health, wellbeing, resilience and attainment.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Outdoor Learning has been working closely with organisations like Mendip Adventure to evidence the benefits of connecting young people with nature and adventure as part of their education.
Following her visit, Tessa Munt MP said:
“Thank you Mendip for the opportunity to see first-hand the impact of outdoor learning and adventure. There is no doubt that time spent in nature can be transformative—helping young people to grow in confidence, build resilience and develop a lifelong respect for the environment. I look forward to exploring how best I can support the work of the APPG for Outdoor Learning and to keeping in touch about its progress.”
Phil Turner, Head of Centre, said:
“We’re proud to demonstrate the role outdoor education plays in shaping futures and boosting the local economy. It was a privilege to share our story with Tessa and we welcome her commitment to supporting outdoor learning.”
