One of Bristol’s most distinctive creative events returns this month, as The Island Open Studios opens the doors of the city’s former central police station for a vibrant weekend of exhibitions, workshops and live performances. Taking place from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 September, the event invites the public to explore the working studios of more than 40 artists across three floors of the iconic 1920s building on Nelson Street.

From contemporary art and textiles to circus and dance, visitors will have the chance to experience Bristol’s thriving independent arts scene in one of its most atmospheric settings. Once home to the city’s police headquarters, The Island now serves as a multidisciplinary arts hub run by the charity Artspace Lifespace. For one weekend only, the public will be able to tour the former holding cells and exercise yard, where original prison fixtures sit alongside colourful murals, graffiti and new installations.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy a packed programme of free workshops and taster sessions, including aerial hoop, rope, contemporary dance, sewing, pattern cutting and more. Guided building tours will be available for £4, offering a rare glimpse behind the scenes of this creative landmark.

Among the participating artists is Laura Murphy, an award-winning performance maker known for her innovative fusion of aerial choreography, theatre and live art. “Being part of The Island is a privilege,” said Murphy. “It’s not just about the access to circus training facilities, it’s about being surrounded by an exciting, interdisciplinary group of artists. That kind of environment is rare and incredibly inspiring.”

Kathryn Chiswell Jones  from Artspace Lifespace added: “The Island is more than just a building - it’s a creative community. Open Studios is our way of sharing the energy and passion that fills these walls every day. Whether you're into dance, painting, textiles or performance, there’s something here to ignite your curiosity.”

Founded in 2007, Artspace Lifespace has a long history of transforming vacant buildings into vibrant cultural venues. The Island is its longest-running project and remains a cornerstone of Bristol’s independent arts community. Facilities include a circus training space, gallery, dance studio, sewing studio and rehearsal rooms, supporting hundreds of local artists, performers and creatives year-round.
