Step into one of Britain’s most iconic landscapes this autumn with a free guided walk exploring the wild heart of Cheddar Gorge.

On Thursday 18 September 2025, Mendip Activity Centre, YHA Cheddar and the Mendip Hills National Landscape invite you to join a special Guided Nature Walk as part of the annual YHA Festival of Walking.

The route will take walkers along rocky crags, steep paths and through breath-taking viewpoints in and around Cheddar Gorge. Mendip Hills National Landscape’s nature ranger, Nathan Orr, will lead the walk, sharing stories of rare wildlife and nature recovery efforts helping to protect champion species including the Cheddar pink, adder, black oil beetle, skylark and small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly.

To make the day even sweeter, there will be free tea and cake for all participants at the end of the walk.

The walk is free to join, but participants are also invited to make a voluntary donation to the YHA Breaks Programme, which funds fully and part-subsidised trips for young people and families facing challenges that make travel and adventure difficult to access.

This event is part of the fourth YHA Festival of Walking, a nationwide celebration of walking from hostels across England and Wales. “The fourth YHA Festival of Walking takes place this autumn with a wide range of guided social walks from hostels across England and Wales" said Andrew McCloy, Walks Programme Manager at YHA (England and Wales). "We have a great selection of walking venues where you can learn new skills and gain confidence in your walking ability. Other social walks are designed to care for mind and body and some are more adventurous and lead you along National Trails or explore National Parks with local guides.”
