Weston-super-Mare will echo to the sound of seagulls on Sunday, August 31 - but not all of them will have feathers.
The seaside town is set to host the first-ever Visit Weston Seagull Screeching Contest, with none other than Cooper Wallace, the two-time European Seagull Screeching Champion, flying in to take the head judge’s chair.
At just 11 years-old, Chesterfield-based Cooper has made headlines worldwide for his uncanny gull impressions. His talents have taken him to Belgium, Germany, and across the UK, won him €1,000 on German TV, and even seen him front an advert for Fortnum & Mason.
It all began when a real-life gull swooped down, stole his sandwich, and bit his finger - by the end of the day, he’d mastered the call - a skill that has since earned him international fame, an RSPB ambassador role, and the nickname Seagull Boy.
The Weston event will be open to contestants of all ages, with categories for juniors and adults. Cooper will not only be head judge the competition but also give live demonstrations and top tips for achieving that perfect gull call.
