COMMUNITY CURATOR

Do you believe cultural heritage should be shaped by the communities it represents? Are you excited by the idea of reimagining heritage practice through co-production, creativity, and care?

Black South West Network (BSWN) is looking for a committed and collaborative Community Curator to join the team delivering The UnMuseum – Collecting, Preserving and Sharing Stories of Black Identity and Belonging in the South West project.

Backed by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, this ground-breaking three-year initiative centres a decolonial approach to cultural heritage, one that puts power in the hands of Black and Racially Minoritised communities to decide how their stories are told and preserved.

About the Role

As Community Curator, you will be the bridge between communities and the project, working closely with people across the South West to co-design and deliver participatory events, collecting activities, and capacity-building workshops. You’ll support community-led heritage practice by:

  • Establishing and working alongside a Regional Project Steering Group
  • Supporting around seven commissioned cultural heritage projects across the region
  • Co-designing and co-delivering a sub-regional mapping and collecting programme
  • Collaborating with the Digital Archivist to digitise and preserve collected material
  • Helping shape the final regional festival and celebration event

This is a practical, people-centred role that combines curatorial thinking, deep listening, and hands-on delivery. You’ll be part of a small, supportive team working with care, creativity, and integrity.

Who We’re Looking For

This role is for someone who is passionate about community-led cultural work and who brings experience of co-production, heritage interpretation, and public-facing events. You’ll be a confident collaborator with strong organisational skills, and a deep understanding of how cultural heritage can support empowerment, healing, and collective memory.

We particularly welcome candidates from Black and Racially Minoritised backgrounds and those with lived experience of the communities we work with.

How to Apply

Please see further information at UnMuseum Recruitment 25 — Black South West Network. You will be required to upload your CV and a supporting statement as part of your online application. Your statement should address how you meet the essential and desirable criteria outlined in the job description. CVs alone will not be considered.

Should you be shortlisted, you will be asked to prepare a short 10-minute presentation outlining your experience and approach to the role.
