Half marathon sold out as celebration of running returns to the city on 19 May

Great Bristol Run
With just over one month to go before this year’s AJ Bell Great Bristol Run, the half marathon has already sold out as tens of thousands of runners from across the South West and beyond prepare to hit the city’s streets in what is set to be an action-packed event.

Places for the 10k are also filling fast, with fewer than 500 spaces remaining: sign up

A number of charity places are available for the half marathon, but they are also going quickly: sign up

This year’s event will also include the fourth annual Visually Impaired (VI) Runners 10k Challenge, the first dedicated race in the UK for blind and partially sighted runners. Plus, the AJ Bell Great Bristol Run is once again partnering with Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal for this Family Run, which will see budding runners aged three years-old and above take on a one-mile course. Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal is the dedicated charity for Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Paul Foster, Chief Executive of The Great Run Company, said: “The Great Bristol Run is well known for its welcoming, high-energy atmosphere and a fantastic route that takes in some of the city’s most impressive landmarks, so it’s no wonder the event is proving so popular with the half marathon now sold out and the 10k soon to follow.

“We know runners from near and far look forward to taking part every year and we’re excited to welcome everyone on the start line on 19 May. The city’s streets will be full of runners of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, plus the wonderful supporters who cheer them on throughout the route. We can’t wait to see everyone there!”

The Power of Running

New for 2024, The Great Run Company’s Power of Running campaign brings to life inspirational stories that highlight the transformative impact running has on individuals and communities who take part in its events, including the AJ Bell Great Bristol Run.

Those who are preparing to join the half marathon include heart transplant recipient, Phil Hardwell.

“The power of running for me is the enjoyment of keeping physically fit after receiving my new heart and the mental health benefits that running brings by giving me space away from day-to-day life. I also hope that by running long distances I can inspire others and raise awareness of organ donation.”

The 10k and half marathon routes include a trip through the historic harbourside, past Castle Park and through Queen Square, with views along the Avon Gorge on the way. In response to feedback from participants at last year’s event, the course has been adjusted to avoid a large part of the cobbled running section on Welsh Back, creating a smoother route for runners.

A live finish-line DJ, on-course music zones and thousands of cheering spectators add to the buzzing atmosphere, carrying all the way through to the après-run zone in Millennium Square, an ideal spot to start post-run celebrations with family and friends.
