In an effort to maintain the beauty of Weston's seafront just in time for the School Holidays, a big community litter pick event has been scheduled to take place this Friday, 21 July, from 6 to 7:30pm.
The event will be held on the seafront, with participants asked to meet at The Grand Pier entrance. This initiative aims to bring the community together for a worthy cause while creating awareness about the importance of keeping our beaches clean.
Those taking part will be asked to collect items that are not excessively dirty and work in pairs or groups to facilitate the separation of waste and salvageable items.
To make participation convenient, free parking will be available along the promenade beach road from 6pm onwards and bin bags and litter pickers will be readily available for voluntary participants.
To show appreciation for the volunteer’s kind efforts, all participants will be rewarded with a complimentary portion of chips, generously provided by The Grand Pier. Furthermore, there will be prizes awarded for the weirdest, brightest, and most camouflaged items of rubbish found during the clean-up.
Sam Francis, Event Organiser, said: “We are really looking forward to gathering together this Friday to help keep Weston's beach clean and free of litter.” She added “We are interested in the potential of using rubbish for art and creativity, as part of Weston’s Promenade Weekender taking place 15th – 17th September along the seafront.”
During the clean-up, participants are encouraged to salvage specific items, including single-use plastics like drink lids and ice cream spoons, as well as hard, colourful plastics and beach paraphernalia such as buckets, spades, beach toys, flip flops, and pinwheels. Flexible thin plastics like carrier bags and food wrappers, along with string and netting, are also eligible for collection.
To make the event even more exciting, participants will have the opportunity to salvage some of the collected rubbish and use it as art materials for an engaging hands-on arts workshop taking place the following day (Saturday 22 July).
The free, hands-on art workshop will be held in the Artspace on the High Street in Weston-super-Mare from 12pm to 3.30pm, led by talented artist Anna Chrystal Stephens.
Using the waste materials collected from the Big Beach Clean-Up, those taking part will have the opportunity to create imaginative sculptural objects as well as hand-twisted cordage and twine with thin plastics. The workshop is open to all ages, and drop-ins are welcome throughout the event.
