The Theatre Royal Bath’s cultural partnership with Bath Spa University sees Bath Spa Productions perform at The Egg this month, bringing Hans Christian Anderson’s little-known story to life on stage in an exciting new production of The Corner Shop Goblin from Thursday 8 - Saturday 10 June.

The company includes a cast of eight BA Acting students, supported by twenty-five Theatre, Festival and Event Production students who have designed, managed and provided technical support for the production. The Corner Shop Goblin marks their final project before graduating.

The brand-new show written by Vic Llewellyn, is a heart-warming story that celebrates food for the soul, as well as food for the belly. Set in the late 1970s under the backdrop of Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee, Colin, a grocer, has a special helper in his corner shop, Memphis, 'the Cornershop Goblin', assisting him with preparations for the celebrations on Jubilee day. However, their work is interrupted when an eccentric customer comes in and gives Colin a magical book full of mesmerising stories, which leaves the Goblin with a difficult dilemma.

This colourful story includes puppetry, music from Kid Carpet, and fairy tales that everyone knows and loves, including The Emperor's New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling.

Producer Kerry Irvine said: “We are very excited to be bringing audiences in Bath this newly written production before it goes to audiences nationally. It is wonderful for our students to work on a performance piece that stretches them creatively, but the real prize is working with such talented professionals as they prepare to begin their own journey when they graduate in July.”

The Corner Shop Goblin is recommended for children aged 6 years and over and is directed by Emma Williams, with Jacky Crosher as Assistant Director.

Emma Williams is a writer and director based in the South West, returning as Director for The Corner Shop Goblin after previously directing Shoot Get Treasure Repeat at the Ustinov Studio. Her recent productions include Muppet Die Hard (Wardrobe Theatre), Big Boys Don’t Cry (Opposable Thumb Theatre), The Castle Builder (Vic Llewellyn), Noisy Neighbours (Kid Carpet / The Egg), Pinocchio (Gloucester Guildhall) and The Lost Present Department (Tobacco Factory Theatres). Her next production will be The Eavesdropper, a co-production with Opposable Thumb Theatre and Nordland Visual Theatre on the Lofoten Islands, Norway.

The Corner Shop Goblin appears at The Egg from Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 June. Tickets are on sale at the Theatre Royal Box Office on +44 (0)1225 448844, The Egg on +44 (0)1225 823 409 and online at the Theatre Royal's website
