The Theatre Royal Bath has announced today that David Morrissey will star in a compelling double bill of two works by one of the most influential British dramatists of the last century, Harold Pinter. A new production of The Lover / The Collection, directed by Lindsay Posner, will open at the Ustinov Studio at the Theatre Royal Bath appearing from Thursday 14 March to Saturday 13 April 2024.

Showcasing Pinter’s unique and darkly comic perception of love, marriage and relationships; The Lover, a quirky, tense and intriguing glimpse at the private intricacies of modern marriage, is paired with The Collection, a comic play of suspense and sexual jealousy between two couples, sparked by an anonymous phone call in the dead of night.

Described by the British Film Institute as “one of the most versatile English actors of his generation”, David Morrissey’s forty-year screen and stage career has established his position as one of the leading figures in British acting with roles on both sides of the Atlantic. His many television credits include Sherwood, State of Play, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, and his starring role as Aulus in the Sky/Amazon Prime series, Britannia. His film credits include Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Robin Hood and The Other Boleyn Girl. He has played some of the great theatre roles including Macbeth, Julius Caesar and Peer Gynt, and performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at London’s Almeida, Donmar and Royal Court Theatres.

The Theatre Royal has also announced nine new productions which are set to tour to Bath in 2023 and 2024. London Classic Theatre make a welcome return this summer from Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 July as they present Abigail’s Party. A landmark of twentieth century theatre, Mike Leigh’s ferocious black comedy is set in a suburban living room where Beverly prepares to host her guests. As the alcohol flows and the nibbles are handed around, she and husband Laurence entertain their neighbours Angela, Tony and Sue, whose daughter Abigail is hosting a teenage party across the road. A ruthless and achingly funny examination of 1970s British life, Abigail’s Party has been a favourite with audiences for more than forty-five years.

New treats for families visiting Bath during the summer holidays include Terrible Tudors as Horrible Histories Live on stage appears at the Theatre Royal from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 July. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma, as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial, and each other, turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax. Hailed as "the classiest, most intelligent drama playing on the West End”, this production brings to the stage the taut brilliance of Sidney Lumet’s 1957, three-time Academy Award nominated film, which is considered to be one of the great ‘must-see’ movies of all time.
