Sri Lankan restaurant group, The Coconut Tree (TCT), is hosting fundraising ‘Power Out Night’ across all nine sites on Thursday 23 March from 5pm, raising awareness of power cuts and blackouts in Sri Lanka. Customers will dine by candlelight as electric lighting across all nine UK TCT sites is dimmed for the evening (locations include Cheltenham, Oxford, Cardiff, Reading, Bristol, Bath, Bournemouth and Birmingham). Music will be played at a much lower level.

The Coconut Tree will donate 10% of its takings across all restaurants. The money is being raised for the Meth Mihira Special Education Centre – a children’s facility in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, that cares for and educates children with special educational needs. A charity close to the Sri Lankan founders' hearts, a team from TCT recently visited the centre and the company has committed to supporting them throughout the year through fundraising activities.

Back in Sri Lanka, the home of the five TCT founders, people have been experiencing power cuts of up to 13 hours, as an economic crisis disrupts markets, and the electricity regulator urges more than a million government employees to work from home to save fuel. The island nation has struggled to pay for fuel shipments because of a foreign exchange shortage.

TCT Founder, Rashintha Rodrigo (known as Rodrigo), comments; “Power outs are now a regular occurrence in Sri Lanka, and, having all grown up on the island, we’re passionate about doing what we can to raise awareness and contribute.

“Our Power Out Night will support Meth Mihira Special Education Centre which is often affected by the blackouts – something our team saw first-hand when we visited in February. Despite the challenges they have an amazing spirit, positivity and will to keep going. We’re hoping the money raised will help Meth Mihira to keep providing their vital service throughout 2023 and beyond.”

During the Power Out Night on 23 March, diners can book to eat the full selection of delicious food from The Coconut Tree at one of nine sites across the West and South West, in a candlelit setting. TCT will be bringing out its Hopper Stations for the occasion which will add glow to the low-lit setting – Hoppers being traditional, bowl-shaped coconut milk pancakes. Guests will be able to try some Sri Lankan cooking for themselves.

To support the cause and attend Power Out Night at a TCT near them, customers should book via the TCT website: https://www.thecoconut-tree.com/book-a-table/
