Circumstance Distillery, in Bristol, has launched their first work experience programme, open to women who wish to explore a career in spirit production.

The initiative has been launched to raise the profile of distilling as a career option for women, and the successful candidate will get to shadow a variety of different roles within the company, across both Psychopomp Micro-distillery & Circumstance Distillery.

The intern will get hands-on experience across all aspects of a working distillery; from mashing, fermentation, distillation, cask sampling & blending. They will also undertake a gin recipe development project, where they will research, write, and create a gin recipe to a specific brief.

Head of Operations Stephanie Peck commented “We were recently interviewed by a student and asked why we thought there are less women than men working in the spirits industry and very few specifically in production. This made us think about what we can practically do to help change the narrative and challenge the gender-based stigmas associated with the spirits industry. It is important for women to see that opportunities don’t just exist in marketing and branding; women can own, run and operate distilleries.”

As well as ‘hands on’ practical experience within production, the successful candidate will spend some time shadowing operations, FOH, sales & marketing roles; to get a full picture of the running of a successful distillery.

The programme is open to anyone who identifies as a woman or nonbinary aged 18 or over. It will take place from 13th – 17th February 2023, with a contribution towards travel and accommodation available. The application deadline is 2nd January 2023. All details can be found HERE.
