Theatre Royal Bath’s Theatre School Summer Company are set to return with their signature bold style when they present Blood Wedding, appearing at The Egg from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th August, for a run of six performances. Blood Wedding features twenty-four young actors and six back-stage students in a production which will mark the Summer Company’s fifth year of performances.

Set in the dry heat of the Andalucian sun, this work from Federico Garcia Lorca tells the story of a bride who decides between love and duty; and in doing so unleashes the wrath of ancient feuds set to tear her community apart. With the storm of civil war brewing across the Sierra mountains, this is a place where hatred is all that grows as the characters hurtle desperately towards the inevitable. A play that, at its heart, explores generational divides, how to manage hope with expectation and the feeling of living under political unrest.

Sophie Jacobs-Wyburn, Blood Wedding Director and Head of Community Theatre at Theatre Royal Bath, says:

“Fast paced, passionate, full of threat and brooding, Blood Wedding is arguably Lorca’s most famous play. Popular around the world and an established classic of Spanish Theatre, the play was inspired by the true story of a fatal blood feud, glimpsed in a newspaper article by Lorca, then legendarily fleshed out in a poetic piece of drama in less than a week."

"In this production we aim to re-focus our lens not only on the young love triangle at its heart, but on the wider community surrounding them. How do we cope with such fractures at the heart of our families, our homes? And how do we contribute to the underlying violence surrounding us? Our staging will move the action to 1974, a vision of Spain much more recognisable to a British audience and yet, under the surface, a world away from what you might expect.”

The creative team behind Blood Wedding includes composition by multi-instrumentalist and sound designer Alex Heane, who has toured with companies including the National Theatre and Wise Children. Sam Kenyon Hamp, who joined Theatre Royal Bath’s Theatre School team initially as part of the Government’s Kickstart scheme, has worked as a dramaturg on previous productions and is now Assistant Director.
