The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust has revealed plans to install a cutting edge, environmentally friendly and sustainable lighting system as part of a major programme of repairs and maintenance, due to start in 2023.

The Trust proposes taking advantage of the maintenance programme to replace the existing lighting on the bridge, which is nearing the end of its useful life. The project offers a wonderful opportunity to creatively light the bridge in different colours in celebration of key local or national events. This will enrich and improve the quality of visitors’ experiences and enhance the bridge’s status as an iconic landmark and focal point for the city.

As well as highlighting some of the key architectural features of the Bridge, the new state-of-the-art lighting system will increase the level of illumination at road level and enhance the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and bridge attendants during hours of darkness. Its discreet design will avoid any damage to the listed structure and minimise any intrusive visual impact or disturbance to local wildlife.

Trish Johnson, Bridge Master, said: “Clifton Suspension Bridge is a recognised landmark across the country so while we are making repairs, it makes sense to use this opportunity to make the lighting better, safer and more efficient.

“Up until now we have had to hire equipment to light the bridge in colour for special events, it will be great to be able to be more involved with these events at the touch of a button.”

As part of the planning process, the Trust is holding a public consultation so that Bridge users and the local community can view the plans and give feedback prior to submission of applications for planning permission and listed building consent.

Public consultation will run from 25 May until 17 June 2022, during which time there will be a stand-alone exhibition in the Clifton Suspension Bridge Visitor Centre. There will be a staffed drop-in session at the exhibition on Wednesday 25 May from 3 – 7pm when representatives from the Trust and their design team will be on hand to talk through the proposals and answer questions.

The consultation material will also be available to view on the Bridge website from 25 May at https://cliftonbridge.org.uk/lighting-public-consultation/
