Bristol's iconic ferry service is opening up its hugely popular education and history tours to the city's community groups - for free this winter.

As a committed community business, Bristol Ferry Boats is proud to offer a free, unique and enjoyable educational opportunity to those facing barriers to experiencing the city's maritime history and beautiful harbour.

The initiative follows on from the success of last year's community group harbour tours and continues BCFB's desire to give something back to the city that has supported the ferry service for more than 50 years.

But this winter BCFB is going a step further, offering expert commentary and a fun history tour that follows the successful model enjoyed by hundreds of Bristol schoolchildren and further education students and visitors to the city every year.

'The joy we witnessed and the warmth of the feedback we received last year
made us want to, not only repeat the experience, but do more,' said Co-Director Roisin Tobin-Brooke

'If we can make a small difference to the lives of those who may not have regular access to the joys of the harbour, its rich maritime history and picturesque waterways, we are delighted to be able to make that possible.'

One of the groups that took to the water last year was Home-Start Bristol and South Gloucestershire, a network supporting families with young children.

They said: 'Many of the families we support do not have the financial means to take their children on these kinds of outings, particularly at Christmas time.

'This trip took the pressure off and gave families a chance to do something fun with their kids.'

Emmaus Bristol, who support people out of homelessness, said: 'It was an opportunity to experience something they would never have been able to pay for themselves.

'It was a chance for them to have a break from their worries and have an enjoyable time.'

The free trips are open to local community groups that work with, and support, Bristol residents and will run once a week throughout the winter.

Community groups interested in offering a memorable experience are invited to contact Bristol Community Ferry Boats directly at info@bristolferry.com to apply.

Spaces are offered on the basis of need, so please submit your expression of interest early and outline what difference this trip will make to your group.

Bristol Community Ferry Boats Ltd is more than just a ferry service. The organisation is a community-owned business operating for the public good.

As a not-for-profit operation, every pound spent on the ferry service, private hire, or public trips is reinvested back into the company, directly contributing to the growth of a vital community asset that benefits everyone in the city.
