Residents and motorists in Bath are being notified of final works to finish the cycle lanes that are part of the A4 Upper Bristol Road active travel scheme.

The scheme improves walking, wheeling and cycling along the route and includes separated cycle lanes which introduce new types of bus stops not seen before in Bath.

To finish road markings for the final section of cycle lanes, Bath & North East Somerset Council will be carrying out night time works on November 14, 17 and 18.
Upper Bristol Road will be closed to all vehicles between Marlborough Lane and Charlotte Street from 7pm to 7am on those dates. Marlborough Lane will also need to be closed at its junction with Upper Bristol Road.

The council has written to residents and businesses to warn them of the closures which have been scheduled at night to minimise disruption. Access to properties and for pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

The new cycle lanes which pass a bus on the kerb side incorporate the new bus stops which will be opening soon.

A video which explains how to use the new bus stops can be viewed here.

Councillor Sarah Warren, cabinet member for Climate and Sustainable Travel, said: “It’s great news that the cycling and pedestrian improvement works are nearing completion. They will make it easier for people to cycle, wheel and walk along the route, which will help reduce congestion and improve air quality in the city. The new bus stops will be opening soon and I’d encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with how they work by viewing our video. Along with the new 20mph limit that will soon be in place, we hope the active travel scheme will make it safer and easier for people to travel on foot or by wheel."

“We have notified residents and businesses of the road closures directly so they can plan their journeys. Once again we apologise for the disruption, which will hopefully be minimal as the work is being carried out at night. However, the works are weather-dependent and we will update people further should the schedule need to change.”
The council will also need to restrict vehicle access to Crescent Gardens on a date to be confirmed, but affected homeowners will be contacted with an explanation of the traffic arrangements closer to the time."

20mph speed limits are being introduced along a number of roads in Bath as part of an ongoing effort by the council to improve air quality, reduce the risk of accidents and encourage more walking and cycling journeys.
