Final year students begin the 2021 autumn term with a double bill of Shakespeare. His compelling tragedy of greed and ambition, Macbeth, plays at Bristol Old Vic’s Weston Studio and is directed by Ng Choon Ping, and designed by Choy-Ping Clarke-Ng, who graduated from the School’s MA Performance Design earlier this yearand was awarded the John Elvery prize for exceptional work.

Reuniting the team behind the School’s online production of Pericles in 2020, that enduring tale of love and loss, Romeo and Juliet, plays at the Redgrave Theatre, in a production directed and designed by BOVTS alumni Aaron Parsons and Aldo Vazquez.

Rounding off the year, Hanna Adu-Boateng, the School’s new Acting Tutor, will be directing the welcome return of Kim Durham’s The Nativity: While Shepherds Watched, which tours Bristol’s schools, before public performances at the Redgrave, while Chloe Masterton directs Follow the Star, a new nativity by Philip Monks, at Cotham Parish Church and on tour.

Macbeth
Murders, witches and betrayal: Shakespeare’s dark tale of the corrosive nature of ambition. When confronted by the prophecy, Macbeth is terrified that the witches are merely seeing what might already be festering in his heart. As he and his wife embark upon their murderous path for the crown, we see what was once a golden couple kill their own humanity in the quest for power.

The Nativity: While Shepherds Watched
A young woman is expecting, three magi are researching the heavens and two shepherd children are bored out of their heads minding the sheep - well nothing interesting ever happens around Bethlehem in December, does it?! Wise men (and not so wise men), talking sheep, angels, a shepherd family, camels, a horrible Herod, and carols (old and new) all go to make up a magical retelling of the story of the first Christmas.

Follow the Star
Mary and Joseph are amazed when an angel tells them they are expecting a baby. They are full of joy, but their story is only beginning. Follow their journey with their donkey as they travel to the stable in Bethlehem. We meet simple shepherds, tending their sheep, three wise rulers following a star (not forgetting the camel) and Herod, who is sneakily trying to find out what is going on and stop it. Laughter, surprises and plenty of carols along the way all go to make up a magical retelling of the story of the first Christmas.
Plays at Cotham Parish Church on 14 Nov, the show is directed by Chloe Masterton.
