About
Explore the former home of Charles Wesley, one of the most prolific and influential hymn writers in history. This beautifully restored Georgian townhouse in central Bristol offers a rare glimpse into 18th-century domestic life and the spiritual world of the Wesleys.
Charles Wesley wrote over 6,000 hymns, including Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, and Christ the Lord Is Risen Today. His work transformed Christian worship at a time when church music was limited to psalms. Through hymns written for children, major life events, and the seasons of the Church calendar, Wesley made faith more personal and accessible — many of his verses were drafted during his travels and later completed in this very house.
Visitors can enjoy a guided tour through six historic rooms, including the music room, parlour, and kitchen, and discover the story of the Wesley family’s life, music, and enduring influence. The house is now open to the public — please check their website for the latest available dates and booking information.
