About
There's nowhere else quite like Bath Abbey. Magnificent stained-glass windows, columns of honey-gold stone and some of the finest fan vaulting in the world, create an extraordinary experience of light and space. But there is more to it than that. There has been a place of Christian worship on this site for over 1,200 years and the Abbey remains a living church with services taking place throughout the entire week. Come and experience the special atmosphere and rich history of this holy and uplifting place.
The first sight most visitors have of Bath Abbey is the West front’s unique ladders of Angels, which was inspired by Bishop of Bath, Oliver King’s dream of ascending and descending angels.
Explore the stories of people connected to the Abbey and learn more about the history of this extraordinary building in the Discovery Museum. Objects from the Abbey’s archives are displayed alongside fascinating videos, replica costumes and interactive activities and games. Until 27 September 2025, the Discovery Museum is home to the ‘Austens at the Abbey’ display which explores the links between Janes family and the fascinating people commemorated in the Abbey.
For an additional £3.50 a downloadable audio guide can be purchased online or at the Welcome Desk. Choose from ‘The Highlights of Bath Abbey’ (available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) or ‘Memorials and Empire’ (English only).
Little Explorer backpacks for under 5’s and a family trail booklet, ‘Alex’s Abbey Adventure’, suitable for ages 6-11 years, are available free of charge from the welcome desk. Baby change facilities are available on the ground floor and the Abbey, Discovery Museum and shop are all accessible with pushchairs.
