Westonbirt, the National Arboretum is perhaps best known for its spectacular autumn colours; the vibrant array or reds, yellows and golds to be found at Westonbirt are unsurpassed in Britain and people flock from miles around to see the sensational autumn display. Alongside the spectacular trees and with COP26 just round the corner, this year Westonbirt is playing its part in raising awareness of the environmental challenges we face today.

Trash Converter at Westonbirt

Throughout October there are a great variety of activities to help create a climate for change, starting with the Trash Converter. Westonbirt are working with eco-friendly charity, Hubbub, to challenge behaviours around recycling at Westonbirt. Using fun activities, visitors can learn about why recycling is so important and how putting the right piece of rubbish in the correct bin is so important to improve Westonbirt’s waste streams.

We all know that there are wild animals at danger of becoming extinct, but did you know trees are endangered too? If you are coming to see Westonbirt’s autumn beauty, why not learn more about how climate change is affecting these beautiful trees? Westonbirt’s disappearing tree trail highlights endangered species in the collection and the work Westonbirt and others in the botanic garden community are doing to support conservation efforts. Pick up a trail map when you arrive and learn more about these incredible threatened trees.

If you are looking for something to do with the family over half term, then look no further than Westonbirt’s free workshops. Enjoy different activities such as leaf printing, scavenger hunts and making willow bird feeders, whilst exploring different climate change themes through discovery, crafts and problem solving.

Now is the time, so whatever you decide to do at Westonbirt this Autumn, whether a stroll through the trees or taking part in any of the activities, it all helps with the arboretum’s fight against climate change.
